re-inflating tires in the bush
« on: April 20, 2008, 04:06:29 PM »
Thanks to the folks who answered my tire pressure question.  Great comments.  The next question is regarding re-inflation before hitting the highway home.  What do you use? Portable 12v electric air pump? What have you seen or used that works best? Any one have experience with the CO2 cylinders ?
Thanks
- Mark

I just use one I bought from Napa for $15. plugs into the cigarette lighter. Takes awhile but it works fine.

the cheap ones from crappy tire and wally mart work, but are slow, and can be un-reliable. look at the units from Viair. i think a lot of folks use their electric pumps and enjoy them. a good viair goes for a couple hundred bucks, but can pump your 35" from 10psi to 30psi in a few minutes i bet.
ask around about the viair.

The best bang for the buck for an electric is the Viair 400C, http://www.viaircorp.com/400c.html

    Begin/End PSI     31" X 10.5"
     0 To 30 PSI    2 Min. 28 Sec.
     15 To 30 PSI    1 Min. 25 Sec.

     Begin/End PSI    33" X 12.5"
     0 To 30 PSI    4 Min. 00 Sec.
     15 To 30 PSI    2 Min. 00 Sec.

     Begin/End PSI    35" X 12.5"
     0 To 30 PSI    4 Min. 50 Sec.
     15 To 30 PSI    2 Min. 20 Sec.

Depending on your vehicle and fabrication skills, an engine driven compressor may be able to done cheaply and they can do 15 to 30 psi is 20 seconds. 8)

I use this for $30 from the wreckers...

Cadillac air compressor:

These came in caddy's LTC's, and pretty muchanything with air ride. Go to PYP and you'll find at least a dozen of them

Crappy tire to start until you really think you need serious air.

Engine driven is not very practical on a TJ. The serpentine system creates a lot of headaches. Its not the same thing as throwing together a v belted system.

Viar, extreme air, and several others are good electric systems, but shouldnt be considered until you really think you need considerable air.

Jeeps being as small as they are, you dont need any more then 18psi to safely and comfortably drive yourself home, or to a gas station after wheeling. Without beadlocks you probably arent wheeling with less then 12psi.

6 psi a tire is pretty insignificant, even for a crappy tire compressor.

The caddy ones are cheap and reliable, but really arent much faster then a crappy tire unit in my experience.

Since I have access to the equipment, I'm going to be running air from a high pressure air cylinder. I have a 4500psi carbon fiber SCBA cylinder (88cu.ft volume, plenty for trail use) with a bracket and a high pressure regulator with hoses. I just have to figure out where and how I want it mounted and assemble couplings so I can use air tools if needed.

I would love to have a Power plant one day maybe.
I got a 12v air compressor from Modern. Same as a Viair but cheaper. I finger it is good enough for now. I have other places I need to spend the money first.
