R& P Backlash
« on: April 30, 2008, 06:07:29 PM »
I ripped out the d35 diff and didnt measure the backlash. How important is it when putting the new case back in? If its off, will that cause driveline wind up? Is my TC going to explode in 4wd? Is there a set backlash for the TJ rear diff?

Also, how do I figure out the bearing pre-load?

And does anyone have the ring gear bolt torque specs?

Thanks.

Ring gear bolts 55 ft lbs.

Backlash 5-9thou

Preload 4 thou, or 10 inch lbs (5 for used bearings) additional force to rotate pinion.

ie, pinion alone is 10 inch lbs, pinion + carrier should = 20 inch lbs

I've got the proper torque wrench for measuring pinion preload and a magnetic dial indicator for backlash if you need it....
