New Brakes!
« on: September 25, 2005, 08:09:22 PM »
Had a caliper sieze up on me (not fun), and when I was pricing out parts I found YJ brakes are incredibly cheap! So, I bought new rotors , calipers and pads. I've done this on motorcycles before, this was just as easy and a great do it yourself project even if you aren't "mechanically inclined." I love how easy Jeeps are to work on. Here's the pics of the install. Prices of the parts are listed at the bottom.

First remove the wheel, caliper pins and caliper. You can see the old caliper set out of the way on the leaf spring.

Install the new rotor with a couple lug nuts to hold it on. The rotor was coated with a sticky film from the factory. Some brake cleaner got rid of it.

A shot of the old pad. The pad is drilled, and these holes were full of mud and dirt.

Here you can see I had a lot of pad left, but I figured it was worth it to use all new parts.

New caliper with pads installed.

3 of the 4 pin bushings were in great shape, I'll be ordering a new one tomorrow. The new calipers came with the piston, seals and pin boots, but you have to reuse the pins and bushings.

Caliper installed.

And a head on shot.

Connecting the banjo bolt. The new calipers came with new copper washers.

Setting up for bleeding.

Done!

Tools:
Wrenches: 1/2", 9/16", 3/8"
Lug wrench
Jack and axle stand
Brake hose clamp
Torque wrenches
Mallet (just in case)
1/4" ID tubing for bleeding

Brake cleaner
Caliper grease (high-temp)
Blue loctite
Anti-sieze

Parts Source/Canadian Tire
Costs:
Calipers $29.69 each + $25 core (fenco reman)
Rotors $27.94 each (Wagner Mid-grade)
Pads: set of 4 $39.95 (Certified brand)

Thanks! I used all Crappy Tire mid-grade stuff because after all, this is just a Jeep.  So, I have complete new front brakes for $155.21 and tax(7% in Alberta suckers.) Took it for a break-in spin, no leaks!

I got those el cheapo rotors on mine also, $25 or something at Parts Source, but I went with $50 Wagner pads. I think Parts Source is basically a Canadian Tire but auto parts department.
