When good lockers go bad

I finally got around to pulling my locker apart after it was acting up at ACE.  What I found wasn't pretty.  I have an old style ARB with 6 bolts retaining the cylinder cap.  They had all backed out and 3 had completely fallen out and been destroyed.  The piston and side gears were utterly destroyed. 

So learn from my mistake... never tug in reverse!!!  The shock loads on the front axle are pretty tough

Yes towing in reverse puts a HUGE load on the drivetrain and should be avoid if possible.  Sorry to see the carnage Robin.  I guess now is a good time to upgrade to 30 spline shafts

Is upgrading to the 30 spline shafts really worth it?  I have set of brand new Alloy 27 spline axles sitting in my garage   but if the upgrade is that much better maybe its worth doing.  All I'd need to do is get the 30 spline carrier and new axle shafts right?

The 30 spline shafts are basically rubi D44 shafts and the Super 30 kits are supplied with alloy shafts.  Do you have a HP30 or LP30?  If you have a HP with 30 spline shafts, the axle is basically as strong as the rubi front.  I believe ARB and OX both make 30 spline lockers for the D30, I know ARB does.

Why not just put that money into a 44 ?

He has the big brake ki and walker beadlocks,t which limits him to a jeep axle unless he wants to spend a LOT more money. Meaning a rubi 44, which really has nothing over a hp30, and the stock locker is weaker then an ARB anyways.

Not to mention he can get a hp30 housing for under 200$, where as even an empty rubi 44 housing is close to 1000.

Those bolts were probably coming out for awhile, I doubt it all happened in one tug.  Whats with all the washers under the bearing cap bolt?

No one was supposed to notice the washers    The axle housing has been a POS since the start and thats just one of the things that will make me glad to be rid of it. 

I don't know if the bolts all backed out at once or not... but the locker wasn't making noise before ACE.  I kind of wonder if I didn't destroy the gear when pulling and then all that extra metal floating around helped to cause the infamous ARB bolt back out

He should totally get a good HP D44 for the front.  It would be extremely unfortunate because of the money he has spent in the brake kit and wheels, but he would be better off in the end

Also, I would be very willing to take those parts off your hands to make room in your garage for the new axle swap

hahahah... such a generous offer Scott.  I'll stick with my 30 plans for now.  I am sure eventually I'll be running 1 ton stuff.
