Tire Limits

So.........Sy Swampers are beginning to show some wear now after 3 seasons, and I'm starting to think about new skins.
Soon tube fenders will adorn the Rubicon and I'm wondering if I should go to yet a taller tire
Currently she is shod with 35 - 10.5  X 15 .......any of you Gurus have comments on possibility of 37-40 inch tires and choices ??
Pros VS Cons.........I realize that gearing will play a major role here, but what about axles, u-joints, factory air lockers etc.
4" of suspension and 2" body to accomodate the tummy tuck..........don't want to go any higher that way.
Genrite has new highline fenders for clearance of 40s on a non lifted Jeep ( article in new JP magazine) so I'm thinking maybe something along those lines or REV111 style for the fenders...trying to stay away from the sawzall !!!

a buddy of mine has a TJ with D44s and he has 37s but he is always twisting and snaping the axle but like you said gearing is a factor and with my Jeep I got the stock D35s and only 30 inch tires and I snap the axles 3 or 4 times now.

I'm a conservative driver (arn't we all ) and I have had no problems as of yet with the 35" Super Swamper Boggers.
Dana 44s and factory air lockers...........BUT !!!
 The 4:10 gearing suffers some in 4high but with the 4:1 ratio low T case.....I still have lots of grunt.

Same jeep as you.
37x12.50 GY MTR's for 30,000+kms and than/now 37x14.50 Toyo OC MT's.
5.13's made HUGE difference. i ran thousands of kms with 4.10's and it worked but 5.13's really made it night and day.
i upgraded all shafts to Superior Chromolly.
i broke a stock front  shaft doing NOTHING!
i also broke a Superior in a rockcrawl comp and it was replaced free the next day. It never broke again and i never entered comps again. lol.

i ran 5.5 +1.25 lift. i flatfendered it. It was too much lift. 5.5 was enough.
The swazall is the way to go. Save your money and spend it on an exocage setup as the 'fender'. i have been on my side 6x and other than broken mirrors, i have never had damage with that set-up.
i also was gentle. i hate mud. and technique with a well built jeep overcomes 'pedal to the metal' everytime.

Well i was going to post up that talk to Tom but he beat me to it.

I would say that 37s are pushing the limits of those axles even with alloy shafts.  If you upgrade the lockers to ARB or detroit you can get larger 33 spline shafts for a little more strength.  5.13s will be a must

Also regular tube fenders do not give you any more clearance than the stock flares, but the highline kits or the Rev 111s do.

TnT customs fenders add some wheel well clearence as well.

They look somewhat like mine, but are bolt on, and cleaner application then my garage fabbed units.

In addition, daily driving will get abbusive on things like unit bearings, ball joints, etc etc.

I'm more into the build it if I can thing...so I'll be fabbing my own once summer is over and most of the trail runs are coming to a close.
 Still have a suspension upgrade in the wings when the parts roll in !!

i bet those 36" iroks would fit fine... or the 37" irok thats just a tad bigger then the 36"... your boggers didnt look that worn out. but you could still sell them used and try a new tire out:)

Ideally I'd like to get rid of the body lift ( think I still need at least 1" for the tummy tuck) and run 37 or 38 tire............and prefer a skinny to a fatty (Just like my women  )
So it's probably gonna be either the 37X13.0-15LT or the 38.5X11-15LT in the Interco Super Swamper Boggers

Boggers like to dig down.
The thinner the tire the easier it sinks, This combination may not be useful for our rigs/terrain.

also less stance with skinny tires

also they are hard tire.  can let a ton of air out because they are stiff and hard

oh ya.. they look stupid too


can float over stuff with wider tires
