jeep tj fuel pump
« on: December 22, 2009, 06:08:22 PM »
so i took out my gas tank from under my jeep and relocated it to the back of my truck to gain a wack of rear ground clerence, i took my fuel pump out so i could clean the filter and tank. i went and put it all back togeter and turn the truck over for ever trying to get gas to the motor, then after it didn`t start i went and pulled the fuel line off the pump to see if the pump was pumping fuel but it`s not so i took it out of the tank and put 12 volt strait to the pump, you can here it pumping but still nothing comes out, WTF.

a new pump is just shy of 600 bux

any one have any ideas i`m stumped and don`t have 600 bux it,s that time of the year

is the pump running in reverse? or is it even possible to reverse the wiring?
pick-up line not in the gas?
now to state the obvious (which you have probably checked).... is there gas in the tank?

k... hmmmmmm....

is the angle of the tank different from the original angle? Might be sloped away from the pump, thus starving the pump...

Interesting problem Ryan.

the tank is half full so i don`t think it could be starved the tank is level, maybe i`ll throw some more gas in it and see what happens.

why didn't you just put a skid plate over the gas tank and leave it?   or a 2" body lift and lift the tank 2"?  instead did you put it in the rear of the TJ, thus taking away any cargo area you may have had?

pump whirs?  filters good?
pressure in your fuel line?  so you start it and it just cranks over and over again? does it stutter? is it getting any fuel?  is it throwing any codes?  what did you do to clean the tank? the filter?  did you clean the pump?

I could be wrong on this but when you disconnected the tank the line probably drained (now full of air).  When you turn the key, the pump should presurize the line so to speak, but if it's full of air not much will happen, pump should keep going.

Now for the dumb question.....

Have you tried cranking it with your foot on the pedal to try and bleed the air out   ???

I think you have to prime the pump. Try disconecting the line after the pump and then try to get it to suck fuel. Once there is fuel in the line you should be good to go. My friend use to have a fuel problem on his injected 4.3 cj5. Sometimes it would lose pressure and that is how he would prime it again. Took him like 5 min. Maybe this will help you.

No prime needed on those pumps. Either check the wiring, or check that you didnt brak a clip on the pump can. If you get the can cock eyed, it will cause the pump lines to seperate.

Probably not unless you can find a 97 or newer. OBD 2 stuff in TJ's runs 49 PSI, OBD 1 stuff in YJ only runs around 26 if I recall right. Xj's are probably the same.

Did you check the can or not?

because body lift are the most ugly thing you can do to a jeep, and i was trying to stay low.  there still lots of room for gear in the back.  and now when i drop in a hole i won't get winded by i huge hit when my tank hits, and it didn't cost me anything to put it back there other then finding out the pump is shot.
