harmonic balancner issues
« on: November 17, 2010, 10:21:13 AM »
the crank pulley/harmonic balancer on the jeep doesn't look to happy on my newly acquired ZJ.  its wobbling something fierce.  i noticed it today after the jeep wouldn't start........ i finally got it going but it was making one hell of a racket.  looked at the drive pulleys and the crank pulley is wobbling something fierce. (so is another freespooling pully)  i have a feeling this is my vibration problem as well.
is it fixable or should i just start pulling this engine out?

cheers

Is the actual pulley wobbling, or just the balancer part?

IS it a 4.0L? They used a 2 piece dampener, an inner ring and outer ring with a rubber band between the two. Sometimes the outer ring will start to walk off or it will spit out the rubber band. Replacement at that point is usually necessary but a used one can be used if it visually looks good.

thanks guys,
and ya clay, that sounds like whats happening pretty much.  PITA to change?  just a regular 3 pronged puller should be good to pull it right?   looks like i have to pull the rad too...........
gonna do it this weekend ;)

Easy to change, use a harmonic balancer puller.  Three bolts that screw in to it, a 3 jaw will probably just break parts off.  PA sells them cheap, or I have a spare one you can borrow if you feel like driving to coventry hills.
I just can’t resist a good mud hole!  🤦

If you want another beer drinking supervisor give me a shout I'm around this weekend. that way you know Pook doesn't have to watch you all the time, he can take a nap or 2

Let me know if you guys need a hand. Some run-out on balancer is okay, not a 8 600RPM race engine....right? If you can't fit the puller in with the rad in place, you can sometimes walk the balancer off with a couple of pry bars
