Swappability between YJ and TJ
« on: December 23, 2007, 10:15:15 PM »
I am completely a newbie with jeeps,.. but I do know 95 was the last year for the YJ and 97 was the first year for the TJ

Lots of little changes were made, like the fuel filling spout, front suspension, interior and etc.

What parts can be swapped without hassle?

bumpers?
front suspension?
interiors?

Almost sure that the rear tailgate is the only thing they kept the same for body wise.
If it ain't broke, it ain't mine.

Bumper - front no (different frame width) Rear yes
Suspension - basically no unless you are a fabricator
Interiors - not a lot.  I believe the seats can be changed but they are not a direct swap

Most of the interchangeability is in the drivetrain and driveline.  The engines, transmissions (except for later models), and t-cases are all the same and basically swap back and forth.  Now axles shafts for the most part can be swapped between the two.  That is about it for direct swap, but if you are willing to use a little imagination and have the tools anything can be done

The blocks for the 2.5L have not changed.  The intakes and exhausts manifold have due to the different fuel delivery and most of the accessory stuff swaps over.

So does that mean the hard tops dont swap either?

Also:

What motors will esentially "bolt" up to the current tranny

are the trannies jeep specific? or does other chrysler motors bolt up?

(I did use a search and didn't find what I was looking for)

I'm not even 100% sure what tranny the 5sp is on a 95 YJ 2.5 I4

I don't want to give up on gas mileage,.. i hear rumours of fuel hitting $1.50 this summer

Do a search on google using wikipedia and the jeep model you are looking for....for you, "Wrangler" should produce what you need:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Wrangler

They actually give a fairly good listing of the specs for each model, although there are sometimes mistakes.

2.5, 4cyl, I4:  the tranny you are looking at is the AX5. :)

JP magazine was surprised the doors fit to. They were adapting a TJ soft top to fit a YJ. They made it work, but required parts from both a YJ and a TJ soft top to do it. They tested the doors out and found the slope was on the front of the windshield and not the doors themselves.

I previously test fit my YJ doors onto my TJ and my recollection is the only issue was the door striker. The latching mechanisms are different - but you could probably adapt the YJ striker to the TJ. Apparently the YJ hard top will fit with some minor modification to the top of the TJ windshield frame.
